This poster has been presented on the conference NANOSMAT 2012 in Prague. It shows, that oxygen plasma treatment leads to a significant erosion of sputtered a-C. Furthermore it was shown during this work that oxygen plasma treatment leads to a nanostructuring and roughening of the surface of various carbon substrates including graphite, sputtered a-C, multiwalled carbon nanotubes and Toray Carbon Paper TGP-H-60.. Dubau, Martin, Cerium oxide thin films have been deposited on graphite foil, sputtered a-C on silicon and reactively sputtered CNx on silicon. The attached SEM micrographs clearly show, that cerium oxide exhibits a highly porous structure on CNx even for 30nm film thickness of cerium oxide. High porosity ensures high surface area which is a fundamental requirement for high catalytic activity. Investigation of structure and chemical composition of the deposited cerium oxide films with XPS, GISAX and X-ray diffraction is currently running.
