Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is the oldest university in Denmark. Today UCPH has approx. 39,000 students and 9,000 employees – of whom some 5,000 are researchers. The motivational force of the University's research activities is financially and politically independent, i.e. free basic research; however, specific collaborative endeavours with other institutions and companies also have a place among the countless research activities. The University is divided into six academic fields referred to as faculties. The faculties are further divided into 36 departments and more than 200 research centres acting as the primary workplace for the researchers. Nine Nobel Prizes have been awarded to researchers at the University.

UCPH is the largest educational institution in Denmark. Together, the six faculties offer over 200 programmes for study in health and medical sciences, humanities, law, science, social sciences, and theology. The University also offers a significant number of courses in English each semester.

UCPH is based in four campuses in Copenhagen and is home to ten museums and research gardens, such as the Zoological Museum, the Botanical Garden, the Medical Museion and the Øresund Aquarium.

Our revenues equal EUR 1.1 billion (2018 numbers). In 2017, UCPH won EUR 0.4 billion of external research funding. In the years 2014-2018 (until Oct.), the University received more than EUR 0.18 billion from Horizon 2020. UCPH is constantly among the ten universities winning the most funding from Horizon 2020.
