This paper demonstrates the applicability of anticipatory concepts to experimental cognitive and brain research. It was written in collaboration with a leading neuroscientist from St. Petersburg State University (Dr. Lucia P. Pavlova), who is a specialist in human EEG analysis. Based on our joint work and her experimental findings, we were able to show the modern relevance of early concepts in anticipation research, and how they can be applied empirically. (Individual EEG patterns of students in pre-exam resting conditions and initial exam stages are highly predictive of overall exam performance and subsequent restorative processes).

This full-length paper constitutes one of the main outputs of the PhD project. It shows how theoretical and evolutionary biological concepts of anticipation can be tied in with cognitive science and behavioral research, to elucidate both empirical and conceptual problems of modern science. The expounded notion of anticipation seeks to synthesize the concepts of learning and evolution, and continues respective earlier explorations of the concept (Kurismaa 2016, "Anticipation"; in "Concepts for Semiotics").
