Presentation of Department

Overview of Department Activities

The activities of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and the Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady in Prague are focused on providing therapeutic and preventive care to patients of the Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady, undergraduate and postgraduate education of students of the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, training of junior physicians and nurses within specialist training programs, and scientific and research activities.

Therapeutic and preventive care is provided to patients with orthopaedic diseases and to patients after injuries of the musculoskeletal system. In the care of patients with orthopaedic conditions, we focus on osteotomies, joint arthroplasty, decompressive, corrective and stabilisation procedures of the spine, arthroscopic surgery of major joints, reconstruction of post‑traumatic deformities of the hand, and correction of static deformities of the foot. Care for patients after musculoskeletal injuries is aimed at comprehensive orthopaedic and traumatological conservative and surgical treatment, including osteosynthesis of all types of fractures of the limb skeleton, pelvis and acetabulum, as well as spinal stabilisation procedures performed via posterior, anterior and combined approaches. Our department is part of the Trauma Centre of the Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady, which is among the largest in the Czech Republic (the catchment area includes approximately 1.3 million inhabitants).

The second major pillar of the department’s activities is education. The Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady serves as a clinical, teaching and research base of the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. The main focus of the department’s teaching activities is undergraduate education of students of the Master’s programme in General Medicine (in both Czech and English) and Intensive Care (in Czech), as well as teaching in three bachelor’s degree programmes. Postgraduate education is concentrated on doctoral studies within the subject boards of Experimental Surgery, Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology, and Orthopaedics. Specialist training is focused on pre‑certification training of the department’s own physicians as well as physicians from other institutions, and on specialist education of the department’s nursing staff.

The third core area of interest is scientific and research activity. Research in selected areas of orthopaedics and traumatology is carried out either within grant‑funded projects or as part of postgraduate doctoral studies of our PhD students.
